This game is the original Spider game per the description in Hoyle and many others. 

It is reported to have been  favorite of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Table play may ignore suit for single card movement, but only sequences of a suit move together. Taping the hand plays a row of cards onto the tables, which resembels the legs of a spider descending, if only spiders had 10 legs.
